Parking
- 1/28Parking the car at an intersection
Parking is forbidden within 5 meters of an intersection. This rule ensures visibility for drivers approaching and navigating the intersection, preventing parked cars from obstructing views or maneuvers.
If you wish to park on a sidewalk in Belgium
Parking on sidewalks is generally prohibited unless specific markings or signs expressly permit it. Sidewalks are primarily for pedestrians. Vehicles can only park there if it is a designated area, ensuring at least 1.5 meters of free space for pedestrians.
Parking on bus stop
Parking is prohibited at and within a certain distance of marked bus stops (often 15 meters before and after the stop sign). This ensures buses have clear access to the stop and that passengers can safely get on and off without obstruction.
Parking near a fire hydrant
Parking is prohibited within a certain distance of a fire hydrant (often 5 meters, but always check local markings). Fire hydrants must always be accessible for emergency use. Parking too close can obstruct firefighters and lead to fines or towing.
Parking at yellow broken line along the curb
You may stop temporarily, but parking is prohibited. A yellow broken line means you can briefly stop for loading/unloading or picking up/dropping off passengers, but you cannot leave your vehicle parked.
Parking at solid yellow line along the curb
Both parking and stopping are prohibited. A solid yellow line indicates a strict no-stopping zone, meaning you cannot even halt briefly at that location.
Blue Zone
In Blue Zones, parking is free but time-limited, requiring the use of a parking disc set to your arrival time. Blue Zones usually allow free parking for a maximum period (e.g., 2 hours) during specified times (e.g., Monday-Saturday, 9 am-6 pm) to encourage parking turnover.
Paid Parking Zone
You must pay for parking, typically at a parking meter or via a parking app, and display a ticket if required. These zones require payment for the duration of your stay, and rates can vary. Failure to pay can result in fines.
Specific parking advantage.
You may be eligible for a resident parking permit. This permit allows residents of a specific zone to park free of charge or for longer durations in designated spaces near their home.
If you see a road sign E3 (a red circle with a blue background and a red cross/two diagonal bars) in Belgium, it relates to both parking and stopping.
No parking or stopping is allowed on the side of the road where the sign is located. This sign indicates a stricter prohibition than just no parking; you are not allowed to stop your vehicle there at all, even temporarily.
Parking on a public road with two lanes
You must ensure that other cars can pass freely. Parking opposite another parked vehicle is prohibited. Your parked vehicle should not impede the safe passage of other traffic. A clear width of at least 3 meters should typically be left for passing vehicles.
Park on a roadside verge in Belgium, you must consider pedestrians and passing traffic.
You must leave at least 1.5 meters of free space for pedestrians and 3 meters for passing traffic. This rule ensures that parking on a verge does not endanger or obstruct pedestrians or the flow of other vehicles.

Parking is prohibited on the side of the sign during the indicated days of the month. These rules help ensure street cleaning or access. For alternate semi-monthly parking, you usually park on the side with odd building numbers from the 1st-15th, and even numbers from the 16th-31st.
